Well here is another one from ebay. very nice cabinet which will only need a polish but the Tech? who worked on it needs to be hung , drawn and quartered plus electrocuting and shooting lol. Its not beyond my repair skills just my time acquisition skills . when I get time I will give you the Valve lineup but it now sits in my display room its really that nice and the seller did a excellent job of packing it.

the Tech? who worked on it

aka monkeys. Too many of them out there.

plus electrocuting

The wonder is that they don't manage to do that to themselves.

Having worked on hundreds of sets, it never ceases to amaze at the crazy things some do. The ultimate and only part of what was done was the cutting off of a field coil with a "cold chisel", deciding that was not the problem (there were mental ones methinks) and welded it back on with a stick welder. Naturally that stuffed it.

The classic scenario is that some Monkey with no basic understanding of neither Radio or Electricity will get it & power it: Normally with whatever they have. Like a 110V radio that came with a 240V plug & damage consistent with 240V being applied. That usually proves that it doesn't & makes more work.

They then in a moment of total delusion, think they can fix it, even that they don't know a damn thing about it, nor what any bit does. After they realise (and have totally stuffed it up further) that it is well above their level of total incompetence: They flip it to save face.

Unfortunately we have RCD's now to ensure that a lot of these Morons survive to breed another in there own ilk, instead of getting featured in the "Darwin awards".

Yeah well I have worked out that the on/off volume switch does neither now and the band switch has lost its ballbearings as it just turns smoothly like a volume or tone switch. If that is the problem then I have plenty of old band switches to get parts from. It really will be a nice set when finished. Reliance radios are fairly scarce so this one is worth fixing.

Sounds like a job and a half, hope it doesn't end up a basket case like one or two of mine which I think I acquired from somebody who flipped them after a good butchering...

GTC that's to hold it above the transformer.

Yep, but it would be at home on a DIY set.

I agree it looks odd, having the tuning gang over the tranny seems a bit howdy doody even, wouldn't the magnetic field cause interference?

I was just thinking the same thing. Great way to inject mains hum into probably one of the most sensitive parts of the tuned circuit. I was once told that AWA made Reliance's chassis for them. If so, not one of their better designs.

Lets not get excited because the switch has been neutered: If its retaining spring is not broken, pop down to a bearing supplier & get new ones. This is not an unusual problem.

AHHHH Guys did you notice the way the dial light wire is looped through the top left screw hole on the speaker. I saw this and enlarged my photo to get a better view and yep its through the hole wow stupidity reigns.

I have sent a Photo and the wire just could be shorting as its insulation is cracked . OMG wait till you see it.

Reliance stray wire

Yeah my Strommie had a ball bearing missing from the switch, I found a suitable one out of a small bearing I cannibalised and popped it in and hey presto! All good. Yeah that wire is a munted idea if I ever saw? A real head scratcher. You've just got to hope they haven't screwed with the circuit. A case of getting a schematic and going over it slowly and carefully. Not easy but if somethings not right you should be able to spot it that way. I'm hopelessly colour blind so I just measure all resistors with my multimeter to determine which they are and whether they have the right value, I even do this for new ones as I haven't a chance in hell of reading colour codes, the old ones with the dots I actually can read! I've got some caps I bought from you which I haven't a clue what values they are because they're too small for me to see the markings, though I'm going to dig out the magnifying glass. Mind you last lot I ever got from evatco they just chucked them all in a bag, same with resistors... Took hours to sort them out into their correct values!

Can't wait to see what sort of abomination may be lurking in the pan? New wire (love the Goat shield) showing has to ring alarm bells: Major opportunity for tatty wiring & the wrong gauge. Believe it or not I had a Tasma that came with the wrong gauge (factory) on heater & filament?

I trained as a Textile dyer & Pilot. So I can declare I am not in any way colour blind. Mother was in one area, real handy when your an artist. Never was impressed when she had spent a lot of time trying and failing to match a colour & I would get it often in a few seconds.

Under the heading 50 shades of gray, colours on resistors are often consistent, I should scan a standard Kodak photo bar I have here to show the level of black to white they produce. 26% of males & 8% of females have issues with colour perception.
