Thanks to Mark and Brad for their previous help on my under chassis capacitors.
I have two defective upper chassis mount electrolytic capacitors ( the multimeter shows as continuous continuity).
Am I right in assuming the the centre pin of the three on the unit is the positive.
The capacities of the two are:
24 mFD, 350 Volt. and 8 mFD, 525 volt
Do I now need to use the Axial type Sprague Atom Electrolytic with the closest capacities I have seen being: 30 500 and, 8 450
Regards Barry

Electrolytic capacitors tended to be plus or minus 40%

If you wish to use Sprague 10 mfd 500 would replace the 8 mfd (525 may be the surge voltage)

and 30 mfd should not strain the frienship with the rectifier. the other alternative is 22 mfd at 450V

The centre is normally positive. Do not use the old cap as a tag, cut it free and add a tag strip if neccessary. ie there are other places on that wire that they may be able to go.

If one of these is on a bakelite plate, it does not go directly to earth.

Digital Multimeters are not good for checking Electrolytics, as the capacitor has to charge. Analog meters will charge them (the leads are normally reverse polarity) but it is only a guide to condition, or if they are dead short. The meter will go full scale, then fall back if its not shorted.

I have bought parts from this site.
