Hi again
I'm just wondering whether it'd be a good idea to fire up my old console radio (recapped) without the magic eye valve. The valve that came with it had no outer glass, but a rusty 'chassis'. Would not having this valve stop the RF passing to the AF stages, or would it be possible to short any pin sockets to make the RF bypass the valve, or would you suggest getting a working one that fits?
Thanks

Hi Chirpolo....you are certainly a thinker...I can understand where you are coming from. Removing the tuning indicator should not impair the performance of the radio. It is normally operated from the AGC control voltage. No RF is connected to this device. You don't mention which type type of tuning indicator you have (oops...you did mention that the envelope is broken...so no type number unless it's on the base). If it's a type 6U5/6G5 it has a triode amplifier incorporated so that the voltage necessary to obtain full deflection is decreased.

Rather than rave on here...do you have a copy of the Radiotron Designers handbook? If not we had better get you one.
What brand/model of radio are you working on? Sounds like you need a new tuning indicator too. Should have some in the shed somewhere.
