Hi, I am wanting to replace the electrolytic capacitors in an old valve radiograph.
In looking through the net (within Australia) I do not seem to be able to accurately match up the capacities.
I have: Cap .05, D.C.V.W 400 and Cap .005, D.C.V.W 600.
I understand I can increase the Cap but I am not sure, what if any increase I can allow for in the voltage.
Additionally, I am not sure of the W in the voltage (has the W reduced the true voltage value?)
Thanks Barry

The voltage rating is usually expressed as Working Voltage. If you cannot match the voltage rating then it is best to go up to the next available rating. 450 and 630 VW are more common now than the values you quoted and these are perfectly okay in each respective case. Never go backwards or the new caps will go bang.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

The system was changed to "preferred" values since those were made.

Just buy 630 WV 0.05 will become 0.047 (473) and the .005 will become 0.0047 (472). These are normally "waxed paper" not electrolytics. The new ones will be metallised polypropylene etc.
You may not get red "greencaps" that low.

Electrolytics will usually have negative & positive marked on them and will likely be 16 mfd; 8 mfd; 25 mfd, etc. They may be cans mounted on the chassis. These will have a voltage rating on them also.

If the set is fairly old, it is prefferable to replace all of these types.

Marc
