You could use a capacitor to act as a heater string voltage dropper. See my page http://pw2.netcom.com/~wa2ise/radios/compaa3.html#hcap for more info and a simple excel spread sheet. This assumes no DC needs to pass through it. This reduces waste heat inside the radio cabinet. And at around 32 cents a kilowatt hour in Australia that borders on worth worrying about Smile

As this is an intrinsically dangerous set have you considered using a transformer/s: Even off chassis? I know its not original, however the heaters can be rewired for a/ tapped secondary transformer/s.

That would make it workable & a whole lot safer.

I hope that UK seller knows how to pack glass for a long trip.

Hi GTC,

I did give him special instructions to package it for the long trip, but we will soon find out.

Hi Marc,

I thought about transformers , but the owner didn't want to go down that route.

Hi

Wa2ise, I will take a look for future reference , may try it till the barretters arrive.

Thanks for all your help folks , I still have to get this thing to work , and make a dial setup.

Cheers
Vic

Be careful using caps on the mains drawing current. You basically need a "motor run" cap. Motor start caps are not recommended as in many cases they are not designed to handle current for long periods. According to the local motor re-winder, a lot of those smallish rectangular ones are not reliable and he will not use them.
