Hi Folks,

I have just picked up a Loewe Opta valve radio/record player. I would like to get a schematic for it as someone has had a go at it and I'm not sure if everything is working as it should.

The MW/AM tuner is picking up stations ok but the KW, LW & UW don't pick up anything (I'm not even sure what they should pick up).

I'm also need to replace one of the rotary control knobs due to one on it being broken.

I looked for a model number and all I could find is 247...

Any assistance appreciated.

Cheers
Scott

Impossible to identify without more information or photos as there are a lot of different models of Loewe-Opta radiograms.

These are imported from Germany so information is hard to find for them here. European web sites will have a lot more information about it.

Let us know the valve line-up for starters.

I'll put up a couple of pics of the Loewe Opta along with the valve lineup in the next couple of days.

Hey guys,

I have emailed a couple of pics for loading here so you can see what the unit looks like. I checked the valve lineup today:

EL84, EL84, EBC91, EABC80, EF85, ECH81and ECC85.

Cheers
Scott

Is there an EM84 tuning indicator missing from that line-up? If so, then that's the line-up for about 40 Loewe-Opta sets of the early 1960s.

Looks like a photo will be the clincher for this one.

The MW/AM tuner is picking up stations ok but the KW, LW & UW don't pick up anything (I'm not even sure what they should pick up).

LW = Langeswelle = Long Wave
MW = Mittelwelle = Medium Wave
KW = Kurzwelle = Short Wave
UKW = Ultra Kurzwelle = Very Short Wave = VHF (usually FM, but only 88-~100MHz)

Generally, you'll need a good antenna for long wave and shortwave.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

A close-up of just the dial doesn't really help to much with these sets as a number of Loewe Opta models are quite similar in that respect.

Give us a good front on photo of the entire unit.

but the KW, LW & UW don't pick up anything (I'm not even sure what they should pick up).

The frequencies will be marked on the dial.

LW will be aircraft beacons (the band is used for broadcasting stations in Europe).

You know what the other bands are for.

EL84, EL84, EBC91, EABC80, EF85, ECH81 and ECC85

I have a Grundig radio that looks somewhat similar to your unit. It is possible to guess the functions of some of the valves.

ECC85 = FM tuner (can be replaced by 6ES8 for increased performance).

ECH81 = frequency changer

EF85 = IF amp

EABC80 = not sure, never encountered one. Letters indicate 3 diodes and a triode.

EBC91 = detector, AF amp

EL84 = output valve.

My Grundig has a solid state rectifier, I'm guessing yours does too.

Mine also has a EM84 (or equivalent) tuning indicator.

Equivalents list:
EF85 = 6BY7 (found in B&W TV sets), possible = 6BX6, 6EH7, 6EJ7, 6BW7 and more.

ECH81 = 6AJ8, possible = 6AE8, X79

ECC85 = 6AQ8, possible = 6BQ7A, 6ES8 and many more.

EABC80 = 6AK8, possible = 6T8, 6LD12

EBC91 = 6AV6, possible = 6AT6, 6AQ6 and many more.

EL84 = 6BQ5, possible = 6CW5, EL82, EL86, N709, 6P15.
