 X & Y Mains safety capacitors

This may be old news to most but new for those just starting out.

As per my reading paper caps etc either across the mains or from each leg to earth are not a good idea safety wise. I was about to organise some on the net when I remembered some old PC power supplys in the garage. Low and behold there they are on the mains entry socket.

Most electronic items will have them fitted, so you can get some for free from throw out items. The PC power supplys also yield some good components if you are into transistor equipment.

The often horrid & noisy CFL also has HV caps in it. If you can test them when it dies some of those might salvage & can actually be used in Valve equipment.

If you have the need for caps on the mains (& I do) ensure that these are the proper 275VAC mains approved type. These are often covered in standards association stamps.
