My Pilot 293B has a friction drive tuner . its only a minor issue but it slips when it get to a couple of different places in the dial. Is this easily fixed. there is nothing else wrong with this baby but want to know if any of you guys have come across this sort of thing and fixed it.

If the Pilot friction drive is the same as that found in late '30s STCs, the disc is driven between two washers on the drive shaft. If these and the edge of the disc get worn and/or deformed then slippage might occur. A remedy is to remove the washers and turn them around so that the other face engages the disc.

Another cause might be oil contamination which is easily removed.

The discs I have seen appear to be made of tin-plated steel. Tin is a high pressure lubricant for steel so no other lubricant should be needed. Note that tin can go dark grey after an extended period. This is due to a change in allotropic form of the tin, and doesn't need to be polished off.

There should be a flywheel on the shaft, so that a couple of quick flicks of the tuning knob takes the pointer from one end of the dial to the other, making for fast station changes.

Thanks for that . one day I might get the nerve to have a close look . This old girl is a real stunner in looks and sound. I'm hoping to get her perfect as I will be using her quite a bit.
