Hello
I have a Astor mickey HQ
3 of the 4 valves are 6BE6, 6V6 GT, and 6X5 GT. I can't see the 4th as I have tried to pry the tuning dial off but are not game to put to much pressure on it. Does any one know how it's held on? I would have assumed it's held the same as the volume control knob. Also would appreciate if anyone has a schematic and is able to forward it to us. Radio was working but recently died.

G'day John.

To remove the dial, prise off the round white piece (about 1 1/4" in diameter) in the centre of the dial. Underneath the centre piece you'll find three small screws holding the dial in place.

I'll send a PDF of the full service manual & updates of the HQ later this evening.

Don't touch anything until you read the manual in regards to removing the dial.

EDIT: Read HQ-3 re dial. The earlier dial is a push-on type - the later one being the type I described above.

Dear Stoz,

Your fourth valve is either a 6B8G, octal, or a 6AD8 nine pin miniature, depending on which version of the chassis you have.

I have, courtesy of, TV Collector, the manual and service bulletins for this model, around 35 pages.

If you approach him, I'm certain he will assist.

Thanks Wayne and Monochrome
I was able to sort the problem with the diagrams Monochrome directed us to. Wayne the unit I have has the 6B8G valve with a 6BE6 converter front end. Anyway there were 2 faults both the same so I am bemused as to why. The IF cans on the plate of both the 6BE6 converter and 6B8G IF were open circuit. I managed to be able to repair both as they were open before the windings. It is now up and running again, so thanks for your assistance.

It would be informative if you could state as to how the coils were open? Some formers soften when they are heated and some are decomposing.

The act of changing parts attached to pins on coils can result in breakage at the post. There is also a tendency with a few coils to slip on the former and that can lead to failure.

Pitch & corrosion are also killers. These are things that should be known & passed on.
