For the later plastic sets I use a $2 2metre extension cord from the hardware shop.

If you know someone who works in electrical retail, busted irons are a good source of cloth covered cables.

The cords from fairly modern irons have an imitation cotton covering and are good for coloured mantel sets. If the colour of the cord closely matched that of the set one can usually get away with keeping the moulded plug in place.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

QUOTE: The mains cable is a flat 3 core ribbon where all three cores are grey. No way to identify what goes where.

I'd get out the ohmmeter, and a marking pen, to mark off the wire that goes to the ground pin on the mains plug. And a 2nd pen of a different colour to mark off the hot wire.

In the USA, I really want to get it right, I do have 240VAC, but with a grounded centertap, from the power company.

We have ribbon 3 wire cable for extension cords and such, the middle conductor is always used for the ground. So it's always easy to pick out at either end of the cable. Also true of "Romex" ribbon cable for house wiring, the center wire (usually bare) is the ground.
