Okay, here's my Smiths.

As folks may know, mains-powered electric clocks in operational condition are quite hard to find these days. It took me ages to get this one:

Search for "Smiths Clock" or "Smiths Sectric" on Ebay. Plenty of electric clocks still around and they hold their time better than any battery job as the electric clocks have synchronous motors and their speed is tied to the mains frequency.

New electric clocks are available but these usually form part of a master clock system and cannot run by themselves.

In America, we can get clocks that set themselves to the national time standard transmissions. There's a transmission on 60kHz, WWVB, these clocks are designed to occasionally receive. The clock gets the correct time from this, and in between receptions, the clock uses a local oscillator to keep the clock going. I don't know if Australia has a similar service, or if WWVB's signal would propagate with sufficient signal to noise for use in Australia.

Some nice units [on eBay] at the moment.

When I bought mine about 7 years ago, there was a veritable drought. I had an eBay search running for months before a suitably priced one that I wanted popped up.

That NIST service sounds ideal. I'm not aware of any service like that here nor clocks and watches capable of receiving it. Closest I come to that is using the Internet time service to keep my PC's clock correct.

As I go around setting clocks and watches every 6 months for DST I often consider getting a radio-controlled master slave system for the house, but it's pricey and the range of analogue clocks isn't very attractive -- they're rather industrial looking.

There is a tendency here for the Electronics Magazine to design projects that take their signal from the GPS system.

Wall Clocks

The clocks that annoy me are the poorly designed one's (there are many) with battery backup. When the power fails and the battery cuts in, any semblance of accuracy goes out the window.

Yet my Yaesu 7700 spent months without mains power and held time.

I've always liked Smiths clocks.

I want one of each of those shown below. The green Bakelite one comes in numerous colours like the Astor Mickey radio and it'd be good to get one of each of those colours too.
