 1980's Philips CR 231

Hi all,

I recently bought a 22" 1980's Philips CR 231 television for $30, and it worked perfectly after the first two tests. On the third however, it switched off, started to emit some strange sounds, and went into a cycle of trying to turn on, shutting down, turning on again etc.

I opened it up and have noticed that when this happens, there is a nice red spark appearing inside the flyback transformer. I have been told that I can fix it by applying silicone around the area of the spark (and there appears to be a possible crack in the insulated coating). I have been told that the flyback transformers in these sets frequently failed.

If this doesn't work, does anybody know how I can find out the flyback used, and where I can get one? I can't see any written information on the flyback itself.

The known information about this set:

Model: CR 231
Serial: 05588
Chassis: KT3A
CRT: Hitachi 560CGB22-TC04

All help greatly appreciated,

Chris

Chris. Try contacting WES components in Sydney.

Try WES as Ben has mentioned, if you're lucky they may still have one left in stock. Otherwise I know of at least one other possible source in Melbourne.

During the weekend I'll see if I can dig out the original part number for the flyback transformer and the replacement part numbers that WES use.

If new parts are no longer available, used parts won't be too hard to find so don't be too worried just yet. Your TV uses the KT3A-2 chassis which still turn up fairly often.

Also, can you send me a decent picture of your TV? The CR231 is one of the Philips models that I don't have a picture of yet.

Chris.

It's a pity you are not in Melbourne.

Hard rubbish collection time in the Essendon area & there are TV's everywhere.

Cheers.

Philips kept things simple with the flyback transformer. The same one was used in all Australian production KT3 chassis models which covers TV's with screen sizes ranging from 14 inches to 22 inches.

The factory part number is 4802 140 17078.

The replacement part recommended by all the trade catalogues is the flyback transformer used in the 26 inch sets (KL9A chassis) which is part number 4822 140 10176.
It seems this transformer is a universal replacement type, it will work in everything.

After market replacement part numbers for the 4822 140 10176 transformer are:
Konig FAT10-176
HR Diemen HR2176

WES lists this transformer in their old catalogue as part number EHT45. It is no longer listed in the current one so they may have sold out of them.

If you can find one in stock, the price is quite reasonable at around $26.

Would an EHT46 (not EHT45) flyback be okay for this set? I received an email back from WES, saying that they had some left in stock. I think I might have to grab one or two!

Thanks everyone for your help!

Chris

EHT46 was intended for the Singapore built 14" and 16" portables. It is missing a winding that is used on the Australian models. So it is not really suitable for the CR231.

EHT45 would have been a popular part so I'm not surprised that it's no longer available. They are no longer being manufactured so that means the only option is to find an NOS (new old stock) one somewhere or resort to using a second hand part.
