I've pulled out a radio that I bought a couple of years ago that I didn't have the time until now to restore. So this being my first restoration, I have lots of questions.
Firstly, I'm trying to identify the exact model so I can get a circuit diagram. It's a Technico Aristocrat table model. I've found this website with TA models, but mine doesn't seem to fit any of them.

They all seem to be bakelite but mine is wood. It has 5 valves: 5Y3GT, 6J8G, 6V6GT, 6B6G, 6U7G. It has both broadcast and shortwave bands, mains plug. There is a removable cover on the back that looks like fly wire. When I try to pull out the chassis, the speaker catches at the back so I guess it has to be detached from the chassis first. The chassis has a number stamped on the back, A829. I haven't been able to find any other identifying numbers other than 1613 that's printed on the very bottom of the square dial. The dial and 4 knobs are on the right. It doesn't seem to have an on-off switch either.
The finish is in reasonable condition, but definitely not brilliant. I read somewhere that you can rub it with lacquer thinner, is that a good option?
Thanks
Dan

If it's a mantel set (i.e. no turntable) then it may be a model 751 or 851. Both circuits are fairly similar so if you "unhide" your email address in your member profile, I'll send both of them to you.
Brad has good experience in restoring wooden cabinets, and I'm sure he'll chime in with suggestions.

Without seeing the item, some of them you draw out until the shafts all clear the wood and then you rotate the back of the chassis upwards.
That likely has a NItrocellulose laquer, which is soluble in alcohol (metho) however, you can get into lots of problems with pigment ,if you attack it.
Have a look at the Breville likely in SC May issue, that was wiped with linseed oil as was the Airzone 612 August 2010

Thanks Guys. I've put a photo of it on flickr:

It doesn't look like the photo of the 751, and the 851 is supposedly bakelite, whereas mine is wood.
Appreciate your help.

I've fixed it up. It is now a live link.
When I roll out the recently announced changes to this site the e-mail address filtering in posts will be discontinued now that there are alternatives available. To protect members who have placed their address in their posts I will remove them and replace them with a link to their profile page.
