I have a couple of Quartz crystal frequency standards made by Bright Star Radio, Glen Iris, Melbourne. All around 4 to 6kHz.
Tested them with a Sweep Generator. One doesn't work. Pulled it apart and it is only a thin sliver of quartz sandwiched between a couple of metal wafers and 2 electrodes.
Seems very simple; no cracks or short circuits. What else can go wrong with these things??

There's quite a bit on the various things that can go wrong with them in this Wiki section:

Hope it helps!
