Just restored a fairly ordinary All American 5ive tube radio, an RCA. I changed out all the wax paper caps, and the filter electrolytis. And a few bad resistors. I came to life, but was rather deaf at first. After a little more work on it, it went completely deaf, no reception even on that 50,000 watt flamethrower 6 miles (10Km) away. Using a transistor portable tried sniffing for the local oscillator. The oscillator coil looked and tested with ohmmeter okay. Okay swap out the pentagrid converter 12SA7. Then the radio came to life, better than before!
Seems the old one was on its last legs, and finally gave it up. The IF tube, a 12SK7, was also weak. I created an octal adaptor to make a 5899 sub-mini tube work there.
The speaker is a big one for sets like this, 6 inches (15cm) wide. Most such radios use a 4 inch (10cm) speaker. Sound is quite good for AM.
This radio does need some cosmetic work, the speaker cloth needs attention, and some paint smears need to be cleaned off.

6SA7 /12SA7 is a very different tube than all of the other Pentagrids it has some similarities with 6L7 but is far from the same construction.
This one has its moments, its actually best a BC band tube and after 6 MHz can be a problem as it has no true oscillator grid & it is recommended to use a separate exciter. It can be seriously cranky. It is therefore, hardly surprising for it to lose modulation. not withstanding 6A8 is also a bad tube for SW. All the pentagrids loose HF performance as they die. And between that aside from low voltages is a dead giveaway it on its way out.
One does get these little problems when fixing. One also has to keep an eye on coils some do alter badly with age, & I am seeing plastic formers disintegrating.
Paint is not always a big issue acrylic paint will not stick well to Bakelite, & it tends to destroy it. Methylated spirits also destroys acrylic paint. Car polish with Silicone & Sodium bi carbonate as the abrasive is a no no. And alkaline products will de-lustre Bakelite.
By the looks of it: It should come up well.
