Am soon to start restoration on this instrument which has languished in a cupboard for many years. Apears complete and works sort of.

Unfortunately the meter movement sticks at times and querying whether there is someone or a company that can do repairs.

Have carefully opened the meter up and had a look at the movement. Emphasise looked did not tinker with it. All seems intact, no broken parts and think it may just need oiling of the bearings.

Would prefer someone with greater skills to do this.

As well would anyone have a circuit diagram for this device. Think a meter shunt may have drifted off value.

It is made by Paton Electrical Instruments Sydney. Serial M5 145:88.

Thanks for any assistance.

Model number would be a help.

Is it among those listed on RadioMuseum? (enter brand Palec)

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

OK, now that we see it, that's a model M5 from circa 1937:

So it is a M5, the model number is embedded in the serial number M5 145:88. It appears the valve tester was an optional extra.

When I dismanted the meter found a date written on it, 16/3/1937.

No circuit diagram or instructions on Kevin Chants website so will trace the circuit out and measure all components. Don't think I will ever use the valve tester, just want to get the multimeter up and running if possible.

Will recover the case and fix up hinges, latches etc.

Thanks for the info so far.

That's the expanded version of the earlier VCT which I have and should have a model number on it. These are designed to be run face up.

There are capacitors in it and they will be of dubious integrity albeit I tested the big sealed μF one and it did not leak.

I have paperwork for mine. It has the additional vibrator power supply that is overhauled; rectifier is a one V and both it and the vibrator can fall out & have the same UX4 pinout (Clever).

Would include a pic of the meter back. Mine had screws fall out from obvious mechanical vibration, also reflected in the wiring. One could kill the ones who wired everything in mine with purple wire. The screws that fell & were not visible shorted the meter & it had to have a rebuild.

Mine is fully functional I did however, add an IEC socket as I did not consider its mains cabling intrinsically safe. 6v as noted is still operational.

I should tidy up my paperwork & sent it to Kevin if he has no info. Some is on the WEB. I do have an original manual for my version.

Thanks for your comments Marc. Does the manual you have a circuit diagram in it ? Realise it is a different version to mine but think the basic shunts etc for the multimeter would be the same.

A copy of the circuit diagram would be appreciated if it could be arranged.
