Hi Rob,

Two of the hits made on Google have referrence to auctions of a 736 in NZ.

The first one; trademe.co.nz/Electronics/Radio-equipment/Vintage/auction-20771917.htm

The second one; www.nzvrs.pl.net/aaa/NormDahlCollection.htm

The first one ws for an auction of a collection in 2005 containing a 736.

The second one was also for an auction of unknown date.

Just further indication of NZ production.

The nzvrs site is owned bt the New Zeland Vintage Radio Society. If you are a member of the HRSA, you may be able to extract a schematic from their librarian.

Cheers, Graham...

Hi Graham,

I think you are right - pretty clear evidence of NZ production of this Mullard. It is pity that there were no pix associated with these two postings.

I'm not yet a member of the HRSA but might be worth joining to get some reciprocy with the NZVRS. I also have another NZ model, a Bell, for which it would be nice to have a circuit - at least for reference purposes.

I still have not had a chance to examine closely the circuitry around the rectifier valve to help identify it - hopefully this weekend!

Cheers

Rob

I have only roughly perused the comments so I am not sure if it has been mentioned but most of the stations on the dial glass are indeed NZ stations. Australia had no callsigns starting with 1 (that I am aware of) until the ACT attained self government in the late 1980s, whichafter the prefix "1" was assigned to this territory.

Brad,

You beat me to it. Earlier today I worked through a list of historic NZ radio stations on the NZVRS website and came to the conclusion that the dial glass stations are all NZ stations, but had not got around to posting a comment.

That being the case, I am pretty sure that what I have here is a NZ made Mullard (which is in reality a Philips clone). As yet I have not had any luck identifying which Philips model this Mullard 736 is a clone of, or based upon.

Cheers

Guys,

Update on the provinence of this set. Contacted the lady whose late husband this set was and she confirmed that he bought the radio in NZ whilst there years ago on a business trip.

Now that I am home and have the time, I will do some tracing out of the circuit and confirm rectifier valves etc.

Cheers

Hya Rob, got your email re. the Peter Pan & your request for info re. the Philips.
Coincidentally, I own a 954 Philips set & was not able to find the exact circuit for it. I could ask again but the NZVRS library is in a state of flux . the moment & I feel I've already asked for a lot recently. I can offer quick shots I've just taken - sorry, it's been in the attic & needs a good dusting!. I'll send them to Brad 'cos I think he can publish along with this post.

& I think there are Mullard ones which look very similar. Sorry I've com up a bit short on the info you need

John,

The Philips illustrated in the trademe link certainly looks a lot like my mullard doesnt it? Pity there is no mention of what model philips it is.

The Mullard 736 was not uncommon in NZ, I have been able to find references to it on the net and even some sales of it on your TradeMe auction site. I know it is a big ask, but I would appreciate it if you would approach the NZVRS to see if they could supply a copy of the circuit. You seem to be my only hope on this one.

Regards

Rob

Marc's note about the licence transfer rings true for this receiver.

If you click on the photos containing the licence transfers, maximise the larger image in your browser and use your mouse's magnify function (if your mouse has this function) you can see the reference to the Dominion of New Zealand in place of the Commonwealth of Australia.

That said, these receivers' tuning dial features NZ stations in place of AU ones.

John,

Now that your pix have been posted by Brad, your Philips 594 is very similar to my set, though not a dead ringer - there are differences if you compare my pix with yours. Were you ever able to get a circuit for it? If the philips 594 is very similar to the Mullard 736 then your society may be able to supply you a copy of that circuit (and if you could, forward to me) if they dont have the Philips one.

Brad - re your comments on the sticker on my set. Agree with your comments that it is a NZ set and dial markings to suit. If you see one of my comments earlier above - I did establish from my source of the radio that it definitely was acquired in NZ and brought over. So that it is a NZ set is absolutely confirmed and all the supporting evidence confirms it.

Cheers

Rob

Hi All,

Update on this for those interested. I was able to get a circuit for the Mullard 736 from our kind friends the NZVRS, whom I contacted directly. It turns out that the Mullard 736 is based on the Philips 594; and the rectifier turns out to be a 6X5GT. The complete valve lineup is EF39,ECH35,EF39,EBC33,EL33 AND 6X5GT, with the magic eye tuner valve 6U5/6G5.

Cheers from Rob
