I recently purchased an AWA Console (not sure model at this stage), and am wondering if it is possible to get a new dial cover as the one I have is quite yellow. Also where could I purchase replacement capacitors, and cotton coated wire?
regards
Mark

G'day Mark,
There are one or two blokes who do make reproduction dial 'glasses'. One of the other members here may have contact details. Not all models are supported though but you may be in luck.
Steve Savell usually has good stocks of capacitors. His details are in the Service Directory (link is under the title banner). Cotton covered wire is getting harder to obtain as the cable makers keep buying each other out and consolidating their stock lines. Steve may have some of this left, it's worth asking.

I recently read on a US forum, that some of the guys over there use a product designed for the plastic rear window in soft-top convertibles.
"Apparently", it removes the yellowing from the plastic, and even removes a lot of the light crazing, leaving the plastic clear and shiny again.
Has anyone tried a product like this?
Is a similar product even available over here?
It almost sounds too good to be true, but if I remember correctly, I think someone posted a before & after pic, and there was quite a dramatic improvement.
I'll see if I can find the thread again, and see what details I can find.
I have a vague idea you rubbed the liquid in, then left it to dry, and it more or less sealed the plastic with a coating??
I could be wrong though

I have tried Silvo and it removes the top layer of grime and 'yellow' however the yellowing does go right through plastics of all kinds and this can't be removed by any means that I know of.
Once I made my own cover out of an old cordial bottle. This did the trick but unfortunately it wasn't stiff enough. I think the celluloid covers are of a thicker gauge.

Various AWA lenses are available via HRSA members & are of very good reproduction quality.
I have bought & used them for my AWA R155 & R82 radios.
Cost was $25 ea.
Email me if you require contact details

Most of that early plastic was celluloid, a cousin to Cellulose-tri-Nitrate (Guncotton) and was about as stable.
It is the nitrates from its autocatylitic decomposition that causes the brown stain, nothing will stop it.
A waste of time trying to do anything other than replace it.
Try EVATCO also, for wire.

I tried cleaning mine & managed to remove the years of built up gundge in the sink with warm soapy water & at least then I could see the dial through the lense.Replacement was the end solution.
looking at my receipt it shows lenses are avail for some models from the following list...
Airzone, Astor, AWA, HMV, Healing-scales?, Kriesler,LEMEK, Malvern star, Philco,STC & Weldon
See this document for the complete list.
