Hi Members,

I’d like to be filled with suggestions please guys, how to clean the rust patches off the steel valve sub chassis.( chassis not coated with any thing) without removing the IF’s, valve sockets and other coils on my restoration of my hybrid valve / transistor car radio ?

Then after doing that, I’d like to use a small brush or dab a matt black coating on the bare steel chassis (valve side only at this stage.)

What do you guys think, doable?

I use this stuff

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/283788227070

Its one of many rust converters available but I am more than impressed with it, doesnt take long to do its job, then you can paint over it, or leave it.

I am presently using Bondall Ranex Rust Buster Rust Converter which is phosphoric acid based for rusted unplated steel. This one needs a primer but other phosphoric acid based products are available that also seal. It is not suitable for rusted zinc or cadmium plated steel because the acid reacts with the zinc and cadmium which fizzes away when you apply the product, probably preventing reaction with the rust by galvanic protection.

For zinc or cadmium plated steel I use Galmet Ironise Rust Converter and Sealer because this product does not make the zinc or cadmium fizz - it just turns it black as it does to the rust. I think that this is some fancy chelate chemistry - fifty years since I studied this stuff. But it works and is recommended for rusted galvanised roofs.
