Hi all,

I reference here .... https://vintage-radio.com.au/default.asp?f=1&th=1077 .... the original Thread relevant to my comments here, for anyone who may have one of these radios, now or in future.

Photos of the Breville I am refering to are in Post #5 of the Thread above and almost identical rear view as posted by Marc Post #8. Note the 4 versus 2 "Gilletts" (??) around Speaker grille .... which I believe is for the Breville 730T.

There is however, a difference in valve Line-up. My has a 6AN7 front-end. 6AN7 is painted on the chassis as per other valves, and the socket is original. This differs from the ECH33/35 line-up as shown in similar models. All the circuit diagrams I have seen refer to the ECH33/35.

Also, the 1st Pentode (IF) should be 6U7G, whereas in my radio it has been replaced by 6K7G. The other valves are 6G8G, 6V6GT and 5Y3GT.

Interestingly, I have not seen any changes to the circuit diagram or component values etc..

Marc pointed out most of the problems already .... all electrolytics / wax caps were changed. Most resistors were way of spec, Choke was 'open' circuit and replaced with a an identical Choke from another chassis, Mains cord cracked, no Fuse, blow Dial lights etc..

My radio is now up and running well. I didn't do a re-alignment on this one as its performance seem quite good, except that I got the tuning Dial indication in reverse .... the high frequency stations are at the left end .... Smile Smile

Provided the dial glass is correct for the model.
It must be a case of the incorrect dial drive string installation.
Does the pointer go to the right when tuning knob turned clockwise.
Then does this correspond to the gang being closed at the lowest frequency position.

Hi Johnny,

Re: "incorrect Dial string installation" ... that is correct ... and that was my doing. I didn't look at the Dial Screen before I did the re-stringing. Now, the Dial indicator is correct and Tuning knob rotates clockwise to move the Indiicator to the right. Low frequencies are on right hand side of Dial Screen. I have a couple of radios with this layout

So far, it has survived 2 days of operating ... Smile

I note that mine will have to have the chassis removed again to clean out the mouse shit. It looks like the inversion has happened & the ants are bivouacking and the Mice are moving inside. I have taken compassion on them and am now feeding them. They have ate a couple of packets of Talon & some blocks last week.

It would appear that having Mrs Black living in here was a lot cheaper as she had bushwhacking them from a strategic position 2m from my feet down to a fine art.

Normally, according to Sony, the faults should manifest in the first three hours. So will make sure a set has run 3 hours minimum before I send it home.

TV seems to have worked out so far. Neighbours blew up after 6 months. When I bought mine the best picture on the row of demos was the only one in the shop. Naturally one looked a little disappointed then put a sock in it. However, as it had been used and he was not going to miss a sale. It was offered at a reduced price with full warranty.

An offer to good to refuse as it had been sitting there "burn testing" and if it was going to blow up; On statistical probability it should have well and truly died if it was faulty.

This is one way the Japanese took over the market. If you burn tested it & it died at the factory, they knew they had a problem, sorted it and the customers got very reliable TV and the word got around. One here was still going after 20 years, untouched. Smart thinking: Smart marketing: Cunning purchasing.
