 1950'ish commercial price of valves - especially 807, 6L6G and KT66

I noticed that an AWA 35W PA amp (1G7053) from circa 1950 initially came out using 6L6G push-pull output stage, but later serial numbers changed to 807's. The chassis required changes to fit the 807's, including recessed valve sockets, two insulated rods to bring the high voltage plate connections to the 807 top-caps, and a diy looking perforated cage to fit over the top of the 807's.

The assumption would be that AWA did their cost sums and presumably had a low stocked price of 807's (being post WW2).

I went looking for commercial valve prices in RTV&H and identified single 807 pricing of 16/6 in 1947, and 20/- in 1954, but otherwise couldn't identify pricing for 6L6G or KT66. Would anyone have some pricing details from that time?

I could also envisage that imported valves, such as the KT66 may have had an import tariff of some kind. Certainly Radiotron were quick to substitute 807's for KT66's during the Williamson amp boom days, and even to the point of formally retesting them for a 400V triode rating. I'm not sure if 6L6G's were made in Australia.

Ciao, Tim

Could not spot an Oz 6L6 in the workshop . One was a Hall Electric (London) another GE ; And a killer RCA (USA) metal I found in a HMV that should have been KT66. The 6L6 used as a the throttle in the bench PSU is Russian.

One KT 66 has lost its ID and the other is GE. There is a probability that AWV would have made them here and perhaps Philips?

Prices would vary wildly.

Marc

I've got a few 6L6's, mostly metal ones, and a whole box of 807's. Wonder what a 807 would be worth these days.

Wonder what a 807 would be worth these days.

I bought a box of them (untested) at an HRSA auction for just a few dollars. Oz was flooded with them after WW2.

Thanks to Peter Field I have some more interesting snapshots of retail pricing:

1953 Radio Parts catalogue -
KT66 = 27/9
6L6 = 30/9
6L6GA = 26/9

1954 Radio Parts catalogue -
KT66 = 27/9
6L6 = 30/9
6L6GA = 26/9

1955 Radio House catalogue -
807 = 30/6
KT66 = 27/9
6L6 = 25/-
6L6GA = 26/9

12/1960 AWV valve price list -
KT66 = 27/-
6L6 = 19/11

Edited 1954 prices are correct now.
