Hi there,

My name's Mark and I've just purchased a 1950's model HMV television I think the serial no. is 02525? It switches on and the tubes light up and there is sound. The picture tube makes the sound that it's on but no picture except for a bright white line in the centre. Any suggestions??

Thanks

G'day Mark,

I am not very experienced with televisions but I do assume that there is circuitry for both vertical and horizontal scanning. If the valves light up there might either be a dried out Ducon condenser or a short in a resistor or maybe a valve pin isn't making contact? I'd give the valves a bit of a wobble in their sockets first (with the power off and hands clear of the HT lead and circuit) and see if that yields a result. Failing that, unless you know a bit about electronics you might be better off taking the set to one of the older television servicemen (a chap with some experience with the older tellys).

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...
