GOOD MORNING ALL, HAVE JUST RESTORED A RADIOLA 263 TO WORKING ORDER. THE VOLUME CONTROL IS IN THE DETECTOR CIRCUIT, AND WHEN I ADVANCE THE CONTROL BY ABOUT 250 OHMS THE VOLUME IS EXTREMELY LOUD. THERE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE A SMOOTH INCREASE IN VOLUME. THE POT IS A 300K LOG POT AND ANY MORE THEN THE 250 OHMS THE VOLUME IS UNBEARABLE. WONDERING IF ANY ONE ELSE HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM. BOWLER

Measure the resistance of the pot. You might find it's open circuit at the earthy end.

As well as measuring the pot have you tried another one, 300k is not common, try 250k or even experiment with a 500k purely for elimination..

The volume control is quite conventional in this set. (Unlike some AWA sets.) Check that the pot is wired in correctly. Also check that the AGC system is working correctly. Does the tuning indicator work as it should? To test potentiometers, I place a voltage, say 10 volts across it (out of circuit) and monitor the output voltage (wiper to common) with a CRO. As you turn the control, the trace should move smoothly from 0 to 10 volts. Any jumping up and down of the trace indicates trouble.
