Thanks heaps for the help
I am waiting on those .0022 and .0047 caps (for both my Krieslers!) so it is great to know that not only am I finally replacing something I need to but that it could fix this issue too!
Listening to the 11-77 tonight its amazing (crackle aside) that it does sound pretty good with only two 8 inch speakers. The 11-97 has 6 speakers and although it sounds better the difference isn't quite as much as i'd have expected!

When you say 6 speakers do you mean six separate drivers or a six inch pair, and you don't mean 6x9s ?
Mine originally had a Rola 6x9 pair, and both voice coils were fine, but both cones were cactus.

Ps, if you ever have the chassis out, and it looks like you're going to, would you mind posting a good pic (the side with the knobs and tuning dial)?

Hi Art, yes the 11-97 has two 12 inch speakers, two 6 x 4 inch speakers and two tweeters!! Very well equipped I presume it was a high end model back then! Didn't seem to have heaps of bass as you know so I have added a subby and its a perfect combination now!
Which chassis would you like a pic of? I actually have a few on my phone of both I think although not sure how many capture the whole chassis.

0.1 μF is likely a wax cap, and they might as well go,
it's not expensive to replace those lower values.
You wouldn't want some imbalance between the two stereo
channels to be caused by some 35 cent cap!
Thanks for the pics, I just wanted to see if they were similar.
You can wrap your image links in IMG tags if you want to dodge sending pics to Brad:

Ah cool thanks I didn't know exactly what it was! Is it non polar?
True for 35 cents why wouldn't I change it!
Working on them you can definately see the similarities between them although they are also quite different chassis.
How do you do that with the link?

The one that's in there might be polarised, but the one you replace it with won't be, so long as you got that value right you just posted, 0.1 μF, the replacement would be something like a metal film (yellow) axial, and much smaller.
Usually about 630 Volts.
If I type the tags properly, the forum software will qualify it so:
opensquarebracketIMGclosesquarebracketLINKopensquarebracket/IMGclosesquarebracket
it will annoy some people to click on a link, but better than copy/paste to your address bar to see a pic.
So post a pic of the cap if you're uncertain, whenever you get time.

See how components resistors/caps are in pairs around the pair of output valves?
I would try to be sure they are within spec, at least testing
them against each other... since it's not difficult to do while you are working on it.
I don't know what type they are, might be an early polyester or metal film which might be fine, but there are many suitable replacements

yours for 0.1μF would have a three digit code 104, and would also be 630 Volt.

Yes basically each output is a mirror of the other!
Cool i'll just replace them I think.
Are these ok for the job do you think?

Yes, they are dearer than metal film, just that the yellow metal film are axial.. "cylindrical" like the original ones.
Just easier to work with, otherwise fine.
Thos Jaycar ones could be dark brown, or deep green,
beige, or a terracotta colour, but are all the same.
Jaycar fall short when it gets to high voltage electrolytics.

Yes they are easier to work with but I work right near a Jaycar shop so its just more convenient to get them there (If I asked a couple of days ago I could have ordered from Evatco where I got my .0022 and .0047 (they sent next day too!).
Jaycar do have quite a limited range too - I had to use a few in parallel to get the required capacitance in some instances.

Nice trick Brad
Yes conversions of some units of measurement are in the site's spellchecker. Others like ohms are expressed when one types as per the following example:-
4.7k[ohm] = 4.7kΩ
