Shorted output and rectifier valves are not a common problem.
And can mostly be checked with a tap or two whilst the unit is running normally.
Any arcing should be acted upon with a replacement valve.

There sure are some experts on this site!

That’s a novel idea to protect the opt’s by using a low power rating cathode resistor - it’s such an easy modification for some insurance…thanks for that contribution I’ll do just that.

I’ve actually had a rectifier valve short in my other 11-97; turned it on and heard crackling….lifted the lid & saw the wax bubbling on the main transformer! I shut it off right away, swapped out the valve & worked fine again!

The 6V4 is running right on its limits in that chassis. A 6CA4 is a more suitable direct replacement.
