From the time nylon was invented, that, I believe, is what most dial cordage became. The braid helped grip as does the tension provided by the spring. I have actually seen early sets with parachute cord specified.

The cordage I believe to be Nylon, is vulnerable to solvent; which sends it rigid and it wont drive. Mono filament like fishing line is an absolute no no.

Thanks for the great ideas, I will tackle the belt string problem at assembly time.
