With 9 pins the probability of a 6AN7 is high, Its a Triode Hexode Mixer. It would be hard to identify from a photo.
Comparison with a known 6AN7 would be better.
I would predict 6AN7 converter, 6N8 RF AMP, One 6N8 as detector, one as phase splitter.
I have seen a radio like this in the last few years. I may have to look through some paper work, I know one 6N8 was a dud.

My memory serves me well 71A31 and it went across the bench 21/12/2008.
As per flakes... I also have a circuit, know which collector has it and can likely get it to photograph if required.
This one had a nasty AGC problem, no prize for guessing the cause.

I sent a copy of the diagram to Brad. You should get it. I hope it is what you are after!

The tone and bass switches are 3 pos each...
two speakers in parrallel
No phono i/p
I reckon you fellows are on the money!
I used to have 100's of radios..yes 100's.... got some pictures here somewhere... ex - wife trashed a lot of them...
I still am saddened greatly to think about it..
I only have 2 now...the SC and my STC 418.
I have restored that fully...the timberwork is beautiful!
my email address is available by clicking on my info
Greatly appreciated gentlemen...Thanks

One can drool at some of the stuff that passes across my bench.
Four or so of them have been in Silicon Chip. and there are two very interesting sets 1920' & 1930's that bits are being gathered for. Both have a shot coupling transformer.
Some of the American ones with things like 18 valves & parts inside IF cans. These can really kill time, especially when the last persons workmanship was not good and it lists 65 capacitors and you know that the breed of Mica's in it are normally all duds.
If you get into strife with that set, at least (if it's that one) I know where to get one for comparision and at least have some familiarity with it.

I can get, may take a couple of days.
Should be fairly easy 6AN7 will have wires going to the band switches & be close to the tuning gang. 5Y3 cannot be wrong.
I think the splitter is toward the front of the chassis in an awkward spot.
The 6M5 plates will head for the speaker transformer & their cathodes (pin 3) join & go to earth via a single 80 Ohm resistor.

Info:-- Looking at the back.
6AN7 is on the left front next to the Gang.
5Y3 left of Middle back of chassis
6M5's together at the rear right.
I remembered that there was something odd about this set. the first 6N8 is reflexed and takes the audio off a cathode follower. Note also agc is taken off one diode plate.
Many manufacturers had stopped using reflexing by this time.
This is more of a paraphase push pull as the remaining 6N8's (triode connected) are feeding the 6M5's individually.
Be careful with the feedback wire from the secondary of the speaker transformer. If it's reversed the set can oscillate.

Hello. I'm new having discovered this web site when in trying to identify the radio model of my newly acquired Stromberg\Carlson Royale unit, I was directed to this thread.
I'm certain this is the same model, being # 71A31.
Can anyone supply me with a schematic or advise how I can get one?
Bill.

Received and much appreciated - thank you.
I believe this to be the superior and more complex of the three units I've bought so as I'm a beginner I'll start on the simpler model first.
However before I even lift a soldering iron or a pair of cutters there's plenty of homework to do first. I also need to set up a work area. I will report my progress on this thread with my S-C as I get there.
