Hi Murray,

The coils will probably have been made of moulded hard rubber or ebonite. I would guess ebonite. I would encourage you to start searching around for thick ebonite sheet. It does turn up from time to time, and you will need a piece to make the top. It would be the same thickness as the front panel. Hope your research is going well.

Robert.

So, I had joined radio museum, posted on their forums, and have an email for the owner of the existing example. I emailed te person, back in May, but no response has been received. I’m a bit stumped as to what to do now.. I will try one more time.

Some possibilities: doesn't read the forum, doesn't use the given email account much, possibly infirm/deceased.

When was his last post on that forum? What country is he from?

Well I struck out there too. Someone else stated the person in question wasn’t the owner, he just put up an eBay picture.

Ebonite could be used, it dates to around 1851 but Bakelite patented 1909 is not out of the question.

Yes Marcc, I did a fair bit of reading, and I believe it to be ebonite. It seems to be available from India and China, but I’ve yet to find a supplier on our soil. I will need a piece for the top.

The closest you'll get to an Australian material is a black panel from a meter box. Select this carefully though - the older pieces contain asbestos.

Yes thanks Brad. I’m aware of the asbestos in meterboxes. Never thought of the ebonite being used in there.

It's not exactly ebonite but does look similar.

Well I've had a bit of positive news!
I ran an add on the site UK vintage radio repair and restoration, and a bloke has replied today. He has two friends who both have examples of this radio! He said he will try to get help, and I have asked him for good photos, measurements, and imagine if there was a schematic!
Just getting a little exited now . Yeehah

Just a thought Murray, I would make up a trial cabinet from plywood and sort out the actual dimensions on that, drill holes , mount up parts and so on and actually make a "pattern" cabinet. Then once working unbolt the parts and drill the precious old school panels correctly in one go. Just like I used to when doing RD projects before production got their hands on the design. You can sort all the circuit details and coil turns etc and scratch the hell out of the plywood with gusto.
Fred.

Well it’s taken some time, but patience has paid off!

I have found a guy in South Africa, who owns an example. He has sent me nearly 60 photographs, and he has drawn a detailed sketch of the timber cabinet. I have placed an order with my local boutique timber guy, for the required mahogany. Then I will start cabinetmaking!

Was he one of the fellows that you mentioned in relation to the UK vintage radio repair and restoration site?
