I'm thinking of buying a communications receiver of 60s or 70s vintage, but I'm also considering constructing one as a project instead. Are any of the Electronics Australia designs worth building? I did once try making the EA 160, but it was awful, spurious signals all over the place.

A 50's domestic radio on shortwave should be able to tune
7.125 MHz Wednesday and Saturday mornings for "the AMers".
They are a group that use old equipment that does not have any sideband modes.

Later on you'll be able to tell who's transmitting on a radio with a
valve output section no matter what you're listening on.
I'd recommend looking for something that will do from AM broadcast
through to 30MHz with sideband modes.
