Hi all, I was prompted to get this item out of storage (under a bench) and power it up.
Its a valve unit and very well made.
I had to sort two problems, a rubber wire shorting the mains to chassis and a dicky valve.
I wrote a little article about the fix and will send a PDF to Brad to pin to this post.

Fred.

Document uploaded.

An interesting story you told me about coins Fred. I don't count myself as a collector though I have a few odds and ends like some of the old paper banknotes, one each of the old AU and NZ round five bobbers and one of the first plastic $10 notes with the hologram on it.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

I'm in the same situation, just a few old paper notes (although I cashed most of them in), a plastic bicentennial $10 note, and a few odd coins, mostly those $2 coins with the coloured circle on them.

A couple of things,

1/ Ross Stell, the guy that worked at AWA, mentioned that a 6U8 may have been a better choice to replace the 6AN8.
I have a couple of new stock 6U8A so just swapped one in place of the 6BL8 (same pin out).
He is right, the 6U8 worked ok with about 5db less gain indicating it is a sharp cut off grid just like the 6AN8.
I had 6BL8 on the brain and was my first choice as I have loads of them.
As a general thing the 6AN8 has a far better pin out sequence for a designer in keeping the triode and pentode seperated feedback wise and is probably why the AWA guys used it. Also is a low microphonic lo noise structure ideal for instruments.
The 6BL8 works ok so I just left it in.

2/ Yes I have been writing about Aussie coins for years in CAB having collected then since a kid.
I just despaired about the coin catalogues available covering pre decimal issues.
There was no research done by the people who print them past about 1966!
I did a lot of research and finally started a printing my own book on coins mainly trying to list every coin that you can collect.
I gave that up about 2017 where it had grown into a CD and too large to print as a book.
Most old coins are just keepers for the kids, enjoy them so they can see what old peoples money was like!

Fred.
