This isn't the only enquiry I've had about Fred. The good news is that he made a post last week in Tech Talk. So all should be well.

Yes guys all good, still here alive and kicking.
I only have strength to do a couple of hours of work a day.
Been diverted back to concentrating on my vintage car for the moment.
I had all the spares , NOS parts and other items racked up on a 6 metre long x 2-meter-high set of wooden shelves.
That is every thing from diffs, gearboxes, engine parts, suspensions, the lot.
I built the shelves about 50 years ago from rough cut 8" a 1" flooring with notched 3" x 2" uprights.
My pet termites snuck along the hard wood floor plates and set up a nest in the centre uprights out of sight against the wall.
The whole thing was loosing integrity and threatened to drop the lot onto the car parked next to it!
I parked the car outside and carefully shifted every thing onto the floor and installed new steel shelving and put the whole lot back together.
Termites will not touch the hardwood shed frame. They build a tunnel made of spit and any softer wood they can find as fuel and go looking.
They chewed up cardboard boxes on the shelving and had a go at the shelf boards in desperation.
Any way, I do what I can do in a day.
The record changer project is still half way and sitting there waiting for me.
Nicholas Vinen emailed back, liked the Little General article and has moved it "into the queue" for consideration.
Cheers, Fred.

I'll reply to the post #10 in the 'Dream' thread from Glenn in this thread, being more appropriate than the 'Dream' thread.
Thanks for the link, Glenn, yes, I was aware of the 1992 SC article by Peter and good to read it again where he gives a short history of the design.
I made pretty much the same conclusions as Peter as to why the original design was so popular.
You have to be aware of the social conditions at the time and how that shaped so much of life in Australia in the 50's and 60's.
That little set played in our family garage in the 1940's as my Dad's set as he worked on his car and other projects.
I still see the set (in my mind) on a shelf there, nearly 75 years ago!
Hence my efforts to replicate the set in this thread.
Cheers, Fred.
