Ian, I had a 500pf "butterfly" gang with bronze bushes that would be inherently balanced and quiet running.
Damm thing is somewhere in the shed, but I cant find it!
I saw it last year during a clean up and put it "somewhere".

I will try a twin in line 700 pf gang. It has rough ball bearings in cages but worse, will be a vibration problem.
I'll give it a shot any way.
If I cant find the butterfly, and the inline does work electrically, I may have to fit it out with sealed ball races and a counterweight on the coupling to part balance it.
I have gone for the direct drive option so there is little end thrust except for out of balance forces and the motor can handle that.
The gearbox option or a belt drive are also possibilities but complicated.

Yes, this is barking mad stuff but hey someone has got to try it!!!!!!!!
Make a good article for SC in the vintage section.

Fred.
