I've just started a YouTube channel which I am hoping to use to host video files for this site. However I am a bit unimpressed with the speed of uploading files to their site. It is unbearably slow. Does anyone here have a YouTube account and experience the same problem?

I realise that they'd be taking uploads from potentially millions of people at once but for a company that large, surely they could be providing bigger pipes so that a file weighing about 1MB would upload in around half an hour instead of more than a day.

I've only uploaded a few files and I found the process exceedingly slow.

However, if you Google "fast youtube uploads" you'll find quite a few tips about optimizing the process depending on what software you are using.

Warning up front: many of the people who make YouTube tips clips are almost impossible to listen to for more than a few seconds.

I’ve regularly uploaded to YouTube for about a decade, and yes uploads are slow.
More than a day for 1Mb isn’t typical for me though. At worst, a 10 minute HD clip would take hours, not days.

I've uploaded videos to youtube in the past, and yes it is painfully slow. And if you do some editing on the youtube website, the edits take a long time to finalize. Not great if you have breaking news, but if the material is not time critical, I could live with it.

There are alternative video hosting sites to YouTube, but I don't know if they are any faster as regards uploading.

I know of Vimeo and Daily Motion, not sure myself either as to useability but it may be worth a try.

I too share the same idea as you and unfortunately it is not a problem that everyone experiences, see the internet is a two way connection (download and upload) generally your download speed will be higher than your upload speed so you may need to wait a little longer but you may be experiencing this problem because of a plan you are on? My only suggestion would be to call your isp (internet service provider, bigpond, telstra etc) to see information about your plan and which ones would be better suited for youtube uploads.

Also may I suggest a isp by the name of exetel? For $80 you can get unlimited data plus 100mbps download speed and 25mbps upload speed for their nbn network

But if nbn is unavailable try the $30 unlimited data plan for adsl2+ I think its $30 but check out their website anyway:

www.exetel.com

They have amazing deals Smile I hope I have helped Smile, also if you need further assistance with anything please be sure to add me on facebook:- charlie chukstabakertallar

Charlie, the file is only 1MB. Which ever way it is looked at there is no chance that even the assymetrical nature of a domestic internet connection would restrict a file that size to this degree. It is definitely at YouTube's end. The servers and connections they use to take files is simply not as strong as the ones used to consume files. That is understandable but not to the degree many of us have experienced.

Unfortunately the NBN is not available where this site is located. TPG's fibre is however they do not offer static IP addresses on that network and that is a basic requirement for web hosting.

Welcome to the forums by the way. Your old man has introduced you unofficially but you are welcome to use the Member Introductions forum to do this formally if you want. Smile

If you have a fairly recent iPhone such as 5 or later, it’s inbuilt software to upload video from
the phone to YouTube will upload HD if it’s internet connection is wifi, and SD if cellular.
This is presumably to prevent a huge bill for uploading huge files over cellular,
but if you use the iPhone’s personal hotspot feature to provide another computer a cellular
internet connection through the iPhone, you can upload to YouTube at cracking speed should you choose to incur the bill.
In that case I expect a Gb to upload in a matter of minutes.

Not an iPhone owner, although amazingly enough I did upload Fred's file over a prepaid Optus connection yesterday and it smashed it. I'm camping at the moment and even Telstra doesn't exist here which I why my normal Telstra phone will divert to the Optus one when out of range.

So the end result is that Vintage Radio's Youtube channel is off and running. Smile
