Hi Guys,
As I said in my intro last week I am finally getting into the restoration of a 1937 Healing 417A. I have already stripped the chassis out and started to 'attack' the cabinet. I plan to just concentrate on the cabinet first and then move onto the radio.
WRT the radio, it is battery powered and has only one set of battery leads. I assume it is a 6 volt system, which uses this voltage for the heaters and steps up to the HT voltage via a vibrator/transformer. Unfortunately I don't have a circuit diagram, if anybody could give me some leads on where to get one, it would be greatly appreciated.
The cabinet. Some pretty basic questions for you experienced guys. Is there any special type of paint/lacquer used for the dark brown corners/edges (basically everywhere but the veneer)? Secondly, how hard is it to find the original speaker cloth and where can you source it from (any cloth for that matter)?
Thanks for your help, I'm sure there will be plenty more questions!!!

Yes. Trev it is a 6v vibrator set.
What dimension is the grille cloth? I have a reasonable collection - if I have a large enough piece you'd be welcome to it. Email me....
There are a number of things about which you need to be careful with vibrator sets, both for your safety and avoiding damage to the radio.. Let me know if you've never worked on one before....

Hi Ian,
I will email you some pictures and the dimensions of the cloth/opening.
As for experience with vibrators, I have none. I did electronics at RMIT in the early 70's and then mainly worked on telecommunication and airfield Air Traffic Control systems - Comms and Radars. Early 80's I pretty much headed down the programming path - machine language, COBOL, Pascal. Then into Project/Program delivery of bespoke software development and telecommunications projects.
In the early days we spent a lot of time on fault finding and tuning techniques with valve superhets radios. These all had mains power supplies. Any info you can give me on the vibrators and their issues would be greatly appreciated.
I would love to know where I can get a circuit diagram, I could trace the circuit but some of the component info is difficult to read.
Thanks
Trevor

G'day Trev,
The 417A does run off a 6V supply with HT supplied via a vibrator. The valves are of the 1C6, 1C4, 1k6 and 1D4 series.
I have a schematic from the AORSM which I can email to you if you unhide your email address.
Check the Control Panel at the top of this page to make your email address available.
Cheers, Graham...

Progressing with the refurbishment of the cabinet. Have basically stripped it down, did a bit of structural work and removed all the old lacquer and paint. Light sanding next then the repainting/lacquering. I thought it might have had a shellac coating but it was lacquer. Unsure what I will use for the final finish.
