Wouldn’t it be a battery radio with the back made to swing open like that?

GE model 648 is mains/battery as were many portables of that era.

Looks like an inverted chassis to me.

Yep, made it easier (and safer) to house the large battery rather than having it under the chassis on a transformerless mains/battery set.

The H.M.V. model A 13 B has a chassis with two valves facing up, and two valves facing down.

A collector actually parked one of those 13B's on my bench some time ago. Not hard to get it and likely that one sorted out either.

Love those black mud's with the hard shell: Crack like eggs, especially on the ends, if there is stress & then go short.
