I want to but cannot at present. I am in the middle of rebuilding the delete function.

Aside from the addition of the ability of members to add their own images (which I am finding very difficult to do I must admit, despite managing to do it once before) and adding a couple of handy admin-only functions, there's not much else to do here that would be needed to keep everyone happy.
I try to keep changes minimal as changes that don't enhance tend to get looked down on, whereas the addition of a feature is usually warmly received. I think it is important to understand the difference.
One of the things this site does very well, and much better than off-the-shelf forum software, is keep automated sign-up (ie: spammers) out. Occasionally one or two will slip through the net and that is to be expected though software packages like Wordpress and vBulletin get hammered hard and the vendors' support teams are kept busy indefinitely with writing patches for their systems and related tasks which I don't need to do here because the system is a closed source one, which means the code that powers it cannot be seen by anyone but me. Because of this, it is very difficult for an attacker to write code that can exploit the site. That's not to say it's impossible - I can't ever make a promise like that, but it is more difficult and far less productive than setting something up to attack software that is much more popular.
There's probably another five to six years before the code that powers this site could be considered obsolete even though the system is something like 12 years old and has just had stuff bolted on over time. I think the first thing I would improve here if I do make changes to the look of the site would be the colour scheme. On all the computers I've been using since this site came into being the site is four or five shades of brown but on some computers where the colour settings on the monitor are not balanced correctly by the manufacturer some of these colours appear to have a pinkish tinge which is something I dread. There aren't any immediate plans to go ahead with this though.
UPDATE: I just followed the link to the AK site and yeah, it does seem to have a look that only its mother could love though look is a matter of personal taste I suppose. Going by the Admin's answer to your question it appears they didn't do much in the way of product evaluation before the big change.

Probably the main reason for your success in keeping most spammers out is that you are using unique private software. The spammers probably figure that their time is better spent defeating widely used forum software packages.
To avoid pink tinges, you could reduce the red component in the brown colours. Though that will make the "colour temperature" look a bit "colder"
