The forum linked to requires membership to view photos, most likely why none of the direct links work.

We've lost a lot of old pubs here in Sydney over the years. Many of them due to 'insurance jobs' or what some call a Jewish stocktake. Some have also been knocked down and blocks of flats built in their place. One such pub that looks earmarked for the march of the D9s is the Sawdust Hotel in Gladesville - a worker's pub built next door to a timber yard and saw mill.

The timber yard closed about ten years ago, along with the nearby North & Western Buslines depot and the hospital I once worked at. Many service stations and small factories in the area have also closed and all this combined has taken a lot of employment elsewhere. The poor old pub stood alone as a reminder of times gone by and closed down. A restaurant selling South American cuisine has opened but I doubt it will remain for long and the pub will most likely go and become part of a joint development with the timer yard next door, again - most likely a residential development. Sydney's population is steaming towards 5 million so they all have to go somewhere I guess.

On the other side of the coin, with most pubs here being converted from workers' watering holes to posh establishments with huge bouncers on patrol and the old drinking uniform consisting of the shearer's singlet and thongs long gone, many pubs here have a bright future and are worth millions a piece. I suppose it depends on the location. A subsidiary of Woolworths is the country's largest pub owner with more than 300, many of which were once owned by the once-mighty Tooth brewery.

There was some rumours that Woolies is thinking of selling out but I don't know how far they got with it. It's not like them to sell anything that makes money or diminishes their absolute control of the retailing sector.

That's on a big piece of land with parking lot, and New Jersey has the highest property taxes in the world!
So a business has to really pay its way - stand alone tavern or restaurant won't make it these days.
Same for many of those iconic inner city Australian Pubs - real estate now worth too much to justify their existence.
