What is it that means so much to us in Valve radios?. A bit of sentimentality.

I remember as a child listening to my grandmother's Bendix radio in Kentucky, hearing far off stations back when so many stations had their own formats and shows. I heard Wolfman Jack in Coffeeville, Kansas a few times, though I can't remember if it was on the Bendix. Growing up I listened to a Louisville, Kentucky station a lot from my home in Evansville, Indiana over 200km away. That was a great station that sometimes produced their own recordings, and from there came some original duets mixed from individual recordings that were later re-recorded and released to become huge hits.

News of tornadoes and massive blizzards and some floods came through an old RCA I had found in a private dump on a friend's farm and then put in my shed for when I was working on mowers to finance my old International Harvester as a teenager. Recently, I found MP3 recordings of some of those same news events and re-lived those moments a bit. Without the same tone of the RCA, unfortunately. I miss it. Like a Coke without the fizz I guess.

Now, I listen to the ABC or sometimes a Brisbaine station on my 1940 Ultimate Bandspread. It's a similar feeling that I don't get from listening in with even my better modern sets. They just don't sound right. They sound OK... maybe even more accurate, but not 'right'.
