Does anyone know the actual model of the chassis, the only stamped number is 040500, which is probably a serial number.
From Radio Museum:
Firth Bros Pty Ltd of 149 Little Lonsdale St, Melbourne manufactured radios under the "Precedent" brand between 1933 and 1935. They also made radios for other brands such as "Seyon".
They have no apparent connection with A. W. Jackson Industries Pty Ltd of Sydney which used the brand name "Precedent" after the war.
So do I assume these 1960's radiograms were made by A. W. Jackson Industries Pty Ltd of Sydney.
Did they make the chassis ???
After resoldering the leads back onto the pickup it played records with great sound, I was actually very surprised.
The tone arm wants to start about half way in, like it was playing a 45 rpm record.
Is anyone here an expert on the Garrard RC120/4H turntable ?

This could come down in part as to how it is being used. In order for it to know that it is an LP the record when in "Auto" (Auto type ) it must trip the drop lever. Should that not happen, it will consider it a 45.
Secondly: Lubrication; I constantly see turntables that have not been serviced for decades. The grease soaps dry out & things lock up.

Hi Marcc,
I am not sure how these auto-turntables work.
There is a large arm on top that sits on the record before it drops. There are another shorter arm, is that the one the gauges the record size ?
Even in manual mode the tone arm wants to go half way in like it is spring loaded.

The shorter arm, in this case, sizes up the record. Most turntables work the way Marc described though, as the record falls to the turntable it will hit a mechanism if it is a 33rpm disc. Whilst there were a few 33rpm discs in the smaller jukebox size, these were few and far between and made well after these turntables went into service.
Is this smaller arm moving when the record changer is operating? If not then the mechanism that controls its travel is the likely fault.

This link is to a full service and operation publication on this changer. It was very helpful in getting mine working in my Scharnberg Strauss tablegram. Incidentally, it was not the original, but I guess replaced when LPs became available.

I hope this helps.

The chassis is most likely a Precedent 534B made around 1954 by A.W. Jackson Industries Pty., Ltd., of 153-159 Sturt St., Sth. Melbourne & 67-73 Missenden Rd., Camperdown. Circuit is in the AORSM Volume 14, page 265, or the JR valve manual, P153, or here: http://www.kevinchant.com/precedent1.html
Due to the grease going rock-hard, the Garrard auto-changers often need to be stripped down, cleaned, and re-assembled. As mentioned, the smaller arm will detect the size of the record, in this case 7", 10" & 12". If no record is detected the unit will automatically shut down.

Thanks for the help guys, had a play last night and it partially works. Reading the manual I now understand how it works, been a while since I have played with these. As you said, gummed up grease jamming the mechanisms, Will remove the whole turntable and degrease.
Will keep you posted.
