I was recently given a Ferris Super Seven car radio box & control head.

This is a 12 volt unit, seven valves with a non-synchronous vibrator & supposedly once lived in a MK IV Jaguar. The Bowden cables between the box & control head are missing.

I am wondering if anyone has the original Ferris Manufacturers Service Manual &/or instruction/user booklets for this model.

Also, is there any interest in these old car radios?

I have one of that type of radio with a wrecked speaker & damaged dial card, as well as a few other issues, for assessment. The main chassis is repairable. Most are the same as a mains radio, only the PSU is different and some caps in it are critical & should be HV types.

This came from a Vintage Car Club member and I have repaired others from other Car Clubs as they want "Genuine Parts" or proper aftermarket radio's of the era in them. This can be an issue as many Solid State ones, in particular those with Germanium Transistors are failing oscillators and finding a Silicon transistor that will oscillate in the same circuit can be a challenge.

There is the problem also with SS in that they used electrolytic's as coupling caps and some horrid little non-polarised caps about 1/4" x 3/8" in diameter that have a bad habit of failing in most spectacular fashion & regularly and the electrolytic's dry out.

There are some with permeability tuners with about five coils in them, to add more unreliability.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...
