Ok as the topic suggests I might be opening the can here. I have just been given two sets, on almost works on is yet to be tested.

One ( Kresler 11-7) is 99.9% complete and original with the exception of a new electro. All the original paper caps are in place.

Here's the can bit.....if I need to replace the old paper caps should I just use new caps, try to find NOS caps or disguise new caps inside the old paper capacitor casing??

Any thoughts appreciated?

Andre

My approach is to use new caps under the chassis where they are not seen. For top mounted caps. (normally the electros), I leave the original in place, disconnected and fit a new cap under the chassis.

This preserves the cosmetic appearance and gives the radio the best chance of working properly. My feeling is that NOS caps could be marginal, purely due to age.

Wouldn’t you be a member of the Geelong amateur radio club with the massive radio collection? What does Keith have to say about it? Smile

Does he look like a grumpy old man?
I’ve only spoken to him on the phone, but he was helpful, so I don’t quite buy it Andre.
Introduce yourself, preferably bring the radio, and tell him you want it to come back.
There’s a difference between asking questions and advice than asking for his own time to look at something.

Regardless, I would be most dissapointed if you don’t find the help you need at a
“Radio and Electronics Society”.

I came here first up with the same question, but it’s probably not the can of worms you think it is.
Some items warrant more attention than others.
It sounds like your goal is just to minimise the compromise between making it reliable again,
and keeping it original.
I’m pretty much with Gandhn, and just prefer that compromise remain “under the hood” so to speak,
and in fact, probably prefer new discreet components be visible if someone were to lift the chassis and look.

Basically either for resale, or when I’m dead,
I’d prefer to help the next person assess what they are looking at quickly.

Hey Andre,
I’d be interested to see how it went if you come back here.
If you don’t, I’m inclined to assume you go the help you needed.

If not, for an F call attending a club wanting to bring a radio back, you feel the need to come to a forum,
so long as you’re conducting yourself ok, your entire club would be wanting a flogging.
