It all comes down to storage. I have had quite a few sets, like a Breville 730 I have that featured in Silicon Chip that only needed a valve, the usual caps & resistors, a bit of mechanical repair & the cabinet basically cleaning & oiling.

Outside Repairs: A 1929 Lyric(USA) 70 Series, (Low boy) caps resistors, a New RF Cage for the first four valves, wiring tidy up. Clean the cabinet... put in Magazine. Airzone (Battery console) & The cabinet of a Grigsby - Grunnow "Sherwood" (USA 1932) is not in a condition that justifies more than minor work. (Long case clock- radio). There have been others pass through.

There are still good ones out there.

Marc

When you look back at the photos and see the quality of the 75 year old speaker ( as new ) then I suppose I should not be surprised that the material was good. The electronics had shit all over them which would say that it probably was not stored in the best place . I am so looking forward to showing you guys the finished product.

I just gave my technician a ring to see how the old girl is going and he said he has finished it. It performs like a trooper and very reasonable price as well.

Hey guys I have finally had the electrics restored in this old girl. You will see by the photos I have asked Brad to upload that a lot had been done the first photo is of the components that had been replaced. You will see that my tech had also installed a fuse for added safety and put in a period relevant cotton covered power cable and a bakelite plug which really adds to the appeal now I only have the dial to be rebuilt and the cabinet to be french polished to new standard and it will be really cool.

Switched the old girl on today and was surprised by its sensitivity. With a seven foot length of wire as a antanae I was able to listen to new Zealand and Indonesia so how good will it be with a proper antanae and earth.

If you intend to use a long outside aerial (aka potential lightning conductor), remember to disconnect it from the set when not in use.

You picked up New Zealand and Indonesia on the broadcast band (AM)?

I can sometimes pick up 2YA, Wellington NZ here in Melbourne late at night. 2YA is on 576 kHz AM. 2BH, Broken Hill & 4JK, Julia Creek are also on 576 kHz.

Either way you'll need a longer and higher aerial wire to do that effectively.

Either way (AM or SW) you'll need a longer and higher aerial wire to do that effectively. Location and height above sea level can make it easier in some situations though.

Electric fence insulators do make good radio antenna insulators. Long wire antennas when grounded do make lightning umbrellas. I have a neon tube across mine to ground. Currently I only have a temporary antenna of around 15metres, but the neon flicks a way in a thunderstorm if I do not connect it to a ground rod.

I do have a 1930's RCA Antenna length chart that does show that there is a wrong length for antennas.

Hey guys I was told a while ago that if I ran a wire and attached it to the guttering of my house I could use that as a antanae . I am just wondering if I can do that for my smaller radios. I still intend to build a proper one.
