Just had a radio arrive via post, slightly worse for wear, it was working before sent, now when powered up I just get a tick tick tick tick from the speaker. Any thoughts before I dive in ?

Okay, I'll be first to say it: "Call the bomb disposal squad!"
I have a dim recollection of a similar problem but that was with a transistor set and I think it was to do with bad connection to the battery terminals.
I guess your set is valve? What's the model?

It is an American Dahlberg coin operated pillow speaker radio.
The chassis is a Setchell-Carlson model 416 (commonly called Frog Eyes) and setup to coin operate by Dahlberg, I think!

Try Nostagiaair as that has "Rider" circuits on it and it may be in there?
How good was the packaging? The way packaging was usually tested, was to mark if "Fragile" & send it British Rail.
Something may have come loose eg (solder dag?) and has lodged on a termination carrying B+.

Hi Marcc, it was actually loose in the box, the radio was wrapped in one layer of bubble wrap and a couple of rolls of bubble wrap just in box.
As we know, the radio must be wrapped tight, I prefer radio in bubble wrap then in a box packed tight with crushed paper. Beanies and the like are useless in packing heavy items, they just work their way to the bottom of the box.
The box gets thrown and the heavy chassis want to kept going after the Bakelite case stops, we then get a fracture.
I will check all connections when I get to it, their are two other coin operated radios on my bench first.

Probably where the term "Try sticking a penny in it" came from.
One trick I have seen is to wrap the device, especially if its heavy, wholly in plastic and then, not necessarily in one operation, add expanding foam, which then forms a cocoon around the object.
If you use a bag / plastic to line the box, the whole is easily slid out of the box.

Hi Airzone,
Just a thought ... "Coin operated" .... Suggests some sort of front-end mechanical turn on / turn off device?? Setup correctly?? Can you bypass it safely??
Cheers,
Ian
