Another radio I am struggling to find the right search terms to find information.

The insides:

It has 'Monarch' on it and is small with little d rings on it for straps, to hang it?
Did HMV do a portable range branded Monarch?
Any help is most appreciated.
Erika

Hi Erika.
It looks like a Monarch BKQ. Monarch was made by Eclipse Radio of Sturt St. South Melbourne.
In turn Eclipse Radio was part of the "Electronics Industries" giant of whom also made "Astor" products. This BKQ is a personal portable and dates from around 1949. The Monarch BKQ is based on the Astor KQ which came out in 1947.

Thank you, I can see the page for the BKQ on radiomuseum.org, sounds like it is the one, unfortunately no pictures.

Great, yes I can see how the one I have was based on that Astor model. Very similar.

It is not based on Astor BRQ as the chassis is different. I have one spread out on the repair bench. I do need to get motivated & stop repairing other things & get it and a Philips, off the bench.
Often the ARTS&P label will be a clue as to who made it. There was a list I think on HRSA site?
I have replaced caps etc. in the sets here but I could take photos of this Astor chassis if needed
The circuit may well be the same as Astor the Monarch is in AORSM so it would just be a case of comparison with Astor of that era also appearing in AORSM, it is unlikely that they stamped a separate chassis for the two... big cost, tooling the press.

It is not based on the Astor BRQ. It is based on the Astor KQ. There is a point to be made about Astor, Monarch & Peter Pan models. Monarch & Peter Pans are not re-badged Astor models per se. They are based on earlier versions of Astor models often with layout, circuit & cosmetic changes. The model numbers will indicate the similarities i.e.: KQ & BKQ. I have made comparisons with the Astor KQ & Monarch BKQ, and yes, there are some differences circuit wise.
There was also a Peter Pan BKQ, which is the same as the Monarch version circuit wise.
EDIT: The Astor KQ is in AORSM, Vol. 6 & the Monarch BKQ is in Vol. 8.
