Hi all,
Recently purchased a Philips Glidomatic RF8 and looking for some help to get it up and running again.
Was sold as working, but with a crackle in the right speaker. I stupidly didn't test it and when I got it home the radio is in the following state:
Yes the right speaker crackles, but the left speaker barely works at all! Haha.
Turntable works and is sending signal through to main unit. Can hear it.
Right speaker can go pretty loud but crackles a lot. There's also a "pop" every so often.

I'm looking to recap it over the next couple of days including the 2 large 50μF caps (1 appears to have burst with white hard powder out the bottom).

Is there anything else that is likely to be broken. The valves light up and have tested the speakers with a different valve amp that I have. They seem decent.

If anyone can email me some more info/schematics that would be great!

Thanks

First get the circuit and find out if the caps are the right ones.
The fact that the powder is coming out of the electrolytic says that it is not safe to run.

The electrolytics can explode, and go short either way they can and will do damage if the thing is run.

The idea is to get rid of every old electrolytic and paper type cap where and if fitted and check the resistors as you go. It is actually in my book futile to fault find a set with old electrolytics that can be seen to have failed and paper caps. In fact I would not even bother to turn it on before inspecting it.

That is what happened with the last two radios I serviced, one of which is sitting behind me "burn testing" before being set back in its cabinet and sent back to a customer. I did not have to turn this HMV on to find out the speaker transformer had an open primary.

Just out of curiosity, what do the 2 2x50μF capacitors do?

Thanks

They are part of the R-C filter network that removes the AC ripple from the DC out of the 6V4 rectifier. Such caps work hard for their living and replacements need to be rated for high ripple current tolerance.
