Hi Guys,
I have come to a dead end on all avenues so far,
Has any one seen or heard of a radio branded "PALFREYMAN RADIO".
it is a console early 1920's, very primitive basic 3 valve TRF triode circuit, with moving armature speaker, it has made in Australia badge on chassis, even with a serial number !!,
The closest I got on "google" was and engineer from Tasmania named Palfreyman, who worked for Westinghouse, it's a long shot.
Any information on this radio would be helpful, even if I know if anyone has seen or heard of one floating about
Thankyou
Regards
Ray

All I could find is this advert. Maybe they re-badged like others did.
Palfreyman’s

Well Thanks Peter,
It's a step in the right direction, the radio in question is probably 15years earlier then the advert, but promising, as everything seems to point to Hobart Tasmania.
At least we have a radio distributor Palfreymans pty ltd
Thanks for pic
Regards
Ray

The Democrat name points to AW Jackson Melbourne.
There are only two sets listed in AORSM's One mains one Battery albeit the same chassis may have been used in the Console and the Table versions circa 1949
Mains set was a four valve reflexed set.
AW Jackson and Democrat do not appear in the 1937 Trade Annual.
It may have been a Clone, photo may help? Valves have a release date, so that can indicate "not before"

It looks to me like Palfreyman's was the name of the shop and the brand of both radios was Democrat. If there was an earlier name with Palfreyman's on it then it would have been exclusive to that shop. It was a common practice for a fair while during the valve era and still exists today. In Big W they rebadge Dick Smith televisions and video players with the AWA brand, used under licence from AWA Ltd.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

Badge engineering is not new it has been going on for centuries. I had a tumble dryer made by LEC UK and a friend had an Electrolux: Different trim same LEC.
Slades made chasses for those making cabinets to sell under their own name.
Some Ford cars are re badged Mazda's. Last week a Grundig turntable .... actually Philips.
And so it goes on
