I'm getting this hall runner tomorrow to cut into some floor mats,
then taking the mats to Anderson carpets to have them overlocked.
Then the idea is to stick the mats under some console radios.

Anyone care to show their age by dating this?
It's supposed to be 1920's, but if that's not correct,
I'm still guessing it's no newer than 1930's.

That pattern is eerily similar to the carpet in my grandparents' house when I was a kid, which was furnished as an art deco wonderland -- except for the carpet because my Gran loved colourful floral stuff. So, I'd say 20s to 30s.

Well 30's would also be good, apparently retrieved from an
old Queenslander prior to demolition, back before the rules
regarding preservation of heritage houses.

Sorry I could not even guess, not an expert on carpet design.
Certainly is a bright floral design and would look good under an old radio of the 30's era.

Well the 4 hour return trip was worth it
It's apparently been stored dry in a big plastic tube for some 30 years,
and I got the plastic tube too. Remarkable condition.

Once I join one of these radio clubs I might be able to flog off some
overlocked mats to get some money back since some old timers will have moved into smaller modern units (well maybe).
Will show some pics when done

Depending on condition, that carpet could have been quite valuable before you chopped it up. It looks like an example of the "arts and crafts" style which originated with William Morris in England, and influenced Australian designers right through from Federation until modernism started to become fashionable in the late thirties. Its more common in designer wallpapers than in carpets. It's way above the floral designs that were popular in the '50s and still found around today.
See if there is any identifying maker's label.

It was never a carpet as in a rug, but a hall runner cut in half lengthways, and sewn together vertically to create something twice as wide, quite skilfully matching the pattern together. I have still only taken off parts that even it out
(it was somehow cut diagonally at one end removing it from it's original house).
It's sewn up at each side of it's original width of about 685mm by whatever factory it came from.
I've already got one overlocked and advertised on Gumtree to try getting some of the cost back,
actually marketed as radio or antique mats.
but having one of the mats overlocked is $20, so they need to be on the expensive side.

No matter Maven. It sat on Gumtree for nearly a month and was affordable.
It was I who attributed it's value, and decided the way that it will preserve the history it represents.
I have seen prize winning displays, but have not yet seen history recreated in the display of a single radio.

I have found the architrave, and the wall. A pallet will be easy,
and then it can be finished.

No doubt, you are making an attractive display.
