There is no doubt that this is an 'Essanay' but what model, date etc. There is no identification on this radio other than the 'Essanay' badge mounted on the top of the second stage, no serial no or model type, nothing.
It is a 5 valve T.R.F. line-up is, 80, 24A, 24A, 57, 47. The 57 seems out of place as the valve base had obviously been changed sometime in the past so I suspect was probably another 24A.
Again usual routes of investigation have not been forthcoming, however it is thought that it may be a pre-production or limited edition circa 1929.
Your thoughts anyone.

Good morning Bling,
What info do you have on your Essanay's, circuits etc?
Yours may be similar that is if they are TRF's, I believe that all the early models were TRF,s and Essanay were late in getting into the superhet market.
Anything would be of great help, regards Mike.

Hi Mike.
Your Essanay has a lot of similarities to the AWA model 45E in both cabinet style and chassis. Are the 3 tuning controls ganged together with a chain or metal band like the 45E?
I'm guessing it dates from around 1930 or 1931.
At least Essanay radio's are not super-rare like your Lewbury. May make it easier to find info on it. I can't believe both radios nearly ended up at the tip.
If I can dig anything up regarding model, year, etc., I'll let you know.
Cheers.

Good afternoon Monochrome,
The three tuning controls are ganged together with two thin brass belts (one of which is broken) these in turn are geared down by a drum and spindle cord drive. All chassis metalwork is aluminium and workmanship is good. I have not started work on this yet as I am more interested in getting the Lewbury up and running at the moment.
The guy that I got these radios from obviously wanted them to go to someone who would appreciate them as he went to the trouble to seek out our amateur radio group, however his deadline was that weekend and if all failed they were going to the tip. I suspect he was under pressure to clear the house out, maybe from the lady of the house, anyway he was very pleased for me to take them.
I should also mention that next to each valve a number is stencilled on the chassis but they are not valve types.
80 - F560, 24A - F242, 47 - F203
Regards Mike.

Yes they are.....they're the Philips valve type numbers
80 = Philips 1560 ( check the chassis, as type F560 does not exist )
24A = F242.
Philips F203 is a type 45 output triode and this was used in earlier versions of this radio. The Philips equivalent type number is PH247.
Ron.
