Hi, I'm looking for a working fridge for free because I want one for my bedroom, and NSW guys only because I hate travelling

Nathan - there is a Freecycle group listed in the Maitland area and you would probably have more luck with them than with a Vintage Radio Forum (unless you want a fridge that receives broadcasts).

Look up Freecycle.org and check out the Maitland group. Freecycle groups often have CRT TVs on offer, and they are LOCAL.

If you want a vintage fridge that relates to radio, Astor and Philips both made fridges for a while back in the day. Other brands of the old fridges with the ammonia-based refrigerants are Kelvinator, Westinghouse, Hallstrom, Frigidaire, General Electric and Metters.

Be careful with old fridges. The ammonia gas in their systems is highly explosive.

Hmm, that Freecycle group is interesting. Apparently there's one in Port. Time to sign up I suppose!

I'm only looking for a 70s/80s one until I can save up the money for a 50s rounded edge fridge

I think you'd be lucky to find one of those that's still in good and safe operational condition. Besides, they were not very efficient refrigerators and they need frequent manual defrosting.

Well, I'll just stick to a 70s or 80s fridge then, unless I buy a modern SMEG Fab30 fridge with a retro style Smile

It crossed my mind that you may have been influenced by SMEG's retro-look fridges. I guess you've looked at the price tickets, too.

That's where some people strike trouble with the old Silent Knights. They use a knife or similar object to gouge the ice off the evaporator coil and punch a hole in the aluminium membrane.

Like the one on the Ultratune ad?

Not familiar with that ad, but then I don't watch TV much anymore. (As I mentioned elsewhere, when it finally goes all digital here soon I may not even bother doing anything about it.)

I want an old fridge mainly because they're more efficients

Nathan, I don't think the older refridgerators are as efficient as the slightly more modern fridges.

There are a few reasons why very old fridges lack efficiency.

1. Insulation is not the best.
2. The door seal will most likely have gone hard and will thus no longer maintain the slight vacuum inside the fridge that helps with cooling.
3. The compressor will be a great lumbering beast, at times the pancake type, instead of the purring kittens fitted to today's models.

That is not to say that an old fridge is a bad thing though. If we adopted the same reasoning to radios, none of us would own them either. As a display piece, few things stir the soul like an old fridge in good nick.

Back in my student shared house days I had a 45 year old Lindberg Foster. Apart from the regular de-frosting, it was the best fridge I ever owned. My present fridge, barely 5 years old, is a piece of Chinese junk and will soon need to be replaced.

I like old fridges mainly because they had style up until the 80s
