G'day everyone,

Over the past few days I've had to spend time editing posts that contain poor grammar because they are almost unreadable.

As every computer keyboard comes with a SHIFT key can I ask that members please capitalise the start of all sentences in their posts and make more use of the other character called the full stop.

It may seem trivial to some however it doesn't take much effort to do things properly and doing-so makes your posts much easier to read. It will also allow me to devote some rarely obtainable spare time to including some new features here which should be coming soon.

Funny you should raise this issue today.

Last night I was reading a website article in which every single instance of "its" was incorrectly typed as "it's" and there were maybe 50 instances.

Spelling, grammar and punctuation are foreign words to the lost generation. Some of the graduates who worked for me could not write professional reports to save their lives. They were never taught any formal grammar at school and they floated through university writing ungrammatical sentences.

If I sent something back for a rewrite I'd be asked what was wrong with the first draft. They could not see any problem with what they wrote.

I suspect it's the same situation with the posts that you refer to.

After a long absence, spelling grammar and punctuation are back on the syllabus at NSW primary schools, but not before the teachers were taught them.

Guilty as charged. A couple of posts I made last week from my tablet had every word starting with a capital. I have no idea how to disable it...

I work at a school and it is amazing how many teachers send me e-mails as if they were written by a teen sending a shorthand text message. Either that or they send it in all upper case or all lower case.

The thing is, I'm not an expert and I don't expect perfection from anyone else though I do expect people to try and make the same effort I do.

One other important factor in all of this is that all the major search engines rank websites that contain good content higher than those that don't and yes, this does include what may seem minor like capitalisation and punctuation.

One other thing that I was recently reminded of is the useability of tablets and their on-screen keyboards. The manufacturers need to make using these things easier for us if they are to become more mainstream.

Capital letters are important. For example, consider the following sentence without them:

"I helped my Uncle Jack off his horse."

Just read a post on another forum which was mostly mispelt gibberish so know what you are talking about.

Am typing this on a newly acquired tablet and agree they are a handful.

Will have to get a stylus and see if that is better.

Yeah! Well... very true. Now I have to clean up this desk. I laughed so much I've spilt my brekky. Best start to a day I've had in a long time though.
